Thoughts on Redundancy

Friday, July 8th, 2011

It used to be something that you used to read about in the paper, listen to and watch happen to others on the television as headlines where being announced, redundancies happening to XYZ employees within XYX companies within the UK as part of a market downturn.

More often than not you had never heard of the company, so the views was does not effect me so read or and switch to the other channel!

The world however has changed and redundancy has today indeed become the new modern day grim reaper! Like the sword of Damocles swinging over our preverbal necks coupled with the views and the thoughts that if it is not me today will it be my colleagues at work? Someone that is close to me? A member of the family or our next door neighbours?

With this in mind many professional’s and staring to take matters into there own hands and while they still have the control these career minded individuals are now starting to realise that it is critical to start planning ahead and get that “Exit Strategy Plan” relating to what they would like to do or indeed have that professional job check carried out as to what they actually can do? If I was made redundant NOW!!!

If you have not stopped to considered this for a moment then it might be the right time now while that “sword is swinging else where” to consider how you would plan and cope with a new career and a very different future should redundancy hit you tomorrow??

Career transition or indeed Career Management that is something that more and more professionals are planning into there on going personal expenditure list just like paying for a professional accountant or lawyer, if you need professional help who do I turn to? If this is something that you feel you need to investigate then companies like TCMO ( The Career Management Organisation) are out there with the knowledge and experience of just what could be out there for you with the right guidance and structure career approach

Redundancy

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Redundancy is not the beginning of the end, it is the end of the beginning! This is a time to take stock and to decide what you want to do career wise. Quite simply, you are now coming to a crossroads in your career. Envisage that crossroads – is it straight ahead and much more of the same? A slight change to the left or a complete change of career direction to the right? It is your choice, a golden opportunity, but to ensure success, advice from career experts such as The Career Management Organisation Ltd, is essential. This will lead to the beginning of a career which offers stimulation, challenge, work life balance and financial reward.

You must now focus on what you want to do. Do not panic. Sit down and create a short term plan on what your short term goals are over say the next month. Then project that into a 3 month and then 6 month plan. Again, the assistance and guidance of Career Management experts such as TCMO, is invaluable at this stage.

Focus initially on what you want to do! Carry out a career assessment, a career diagnosis with the outcome being a clear view of what you can term your primary career objective. It may be that you want to run your own business. Your redundancy money may provide the basis for sound start. Irrespective of the route ahead, your CV must be updated and have the impact necessary to open interview doors. Some companies offer outplacement support which will provide basic assistance in CVs, Interview Techniques and Job Searching. If your company does not provide this support, ask them if they are prepared to fund the cost as part of the redundancy package. It is in their interest to do so, support for you, good PR for the company.

Managing you emotions is an essential part of handling your redundancy situation, especially if it is for the first time. Hurt, anger, frustration, depression all have to be managed but having been there myself, the key is a positive mental attitude. From day one of redundancy, eliminate the negative thoughts, and challenge any self doubt. Redundancy will cross our paths more than once. Meet every occasion head on because “success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm” (Winston Churchill).

As you plan your future journey to success, consider retaining the services of career professionals such as The Career Management Organisation Ltd. As you plan to climb the ladder of success, be sure that it is leaning against the right building.

Redundancy can either be a blessing in disguise or a nightmare. The road ahead is full of pitfalls – or they could be stepping stones to success. When a voice says “give up”, just try it one more time. You are on the journey to success. Redundancy was just a pitfall in the road. Use it as a stepping stone to success.
